Google Thought

Google has done a few things lately, which I find each of them has a profound impact.

First, the big G is using a new domain name, the “G.CN,” in China. Very minimalistic, simple but elegant. That’s true, you do need to pick a good domain name that will easily be remembered by the Chinese audiences. Many years ago everyone chose the numbering domain names such as 3721.com, 265.com, 163.com for the same reason.

Of course, all these numbers are either the synonyms or manifestly mean something to the audiences. They are generally more effective than the English domain names. I believe the big “G” for Google will work better than its Chinese name “Gu Ge” in China.

A little sidetrack. How do you pronounce the “@” in Chinese when you need to tell people your email address? In Chinese, we have word for “dot” but we don’t have the pronunciation for “at”. Ok, this is what I’ve learned from street smart. Go pictorial. Some Chinese people describe this “@” the “Little Mouse (小老鼠)” because it looks like a little mouse. So next time when you need to tell your email address in Chinese, try “name{little mouse}something{dot}com.”

Back to Google. Google is experimenting a new search feature that will allow searchers to manually alter the ranking. Searcher can move up or bury a search result. Well, today SEO job is tough enough, I am wondering how the future SEO technique and practice will evolve to face the challenge.

Google is also beta testing pay per action (PPA) ad. According to Google, “Pay-per-action advertising is a new pricing model that allows advertisers to pay only when specific actions that they define are completed … Rather than paying for clicks or impressions, advertisers can choose to pay when a user makes a purchase, signs up for a newsletter, or completes any other clearly defined action that they choose.”

PPA will have its impact on B2B. In my opinion, it should be the ad model for B2B instead of the existing practice which is copied from the display ad model. I will talk more about PPA for B2B in my future post.

Google just rolled out Google Profile. A new feature that connects Google users through a unified identity. This is the Google’s answer to social networking.
