Connect The Dots

12.26.07 |

I know how the obsession of idea look like. It is like playing the connect-the-dots game in a play book. You won’t see the big picture until you make it to the end.

But truth be told, most of the ideas didn’t make their way through. Boil down, against all the odds isn’t an easy task. So while we are criticizing the outcome, we should also appreciate the idea at the same time.

Something that I’ve found from this amateur website “livechina360.com,” it is a mashup using Google API to do vertical search for the information about China. I appreciate the idea because it coincides with one of my beliefs, “China sourcing is a journey,” which requires all-round information.

“China sourcing is a journey” was the proposition of a project which did not make its way to the end, at least for now. It was a vertical search engine that added meta-classes into relevancy before ranking the information. For instance, a buyer who searches for Chinese tea product will have the results ranked relevant to Hangzhou before other Chinese cities, because Hangzhou is the tea city of China. This user experience still makes a lot more sense today.

Another idea that is gradually developed into a challenger position. About two years ago I read an article by Danny Sullivan about natural language search and a company called “Powerset.” It meant nothing more than a buzz word to me by then.

Today, Powerset is heading its way to launch a sensible nature language search engine that will challenge Google by better meta-relevancy. For example, if you search for “Politician who died in office,” Powerset also gives you the results about the governors who died in office because governor is politician. There are lots of interesting information on Powerset’s blog. Worth a read.
