Alternative Search

Here, I gather two highly unpublicized search engines for you. They are not new, both at least two years old, but still remain experimental.

[SEARCHMASH] by Google. Google launched searchmash in 2006 and has kept it a very low profile. It is designed for testing future search engine features and the user experience without the influence of Google’s brand.

Seachmash organizes the SERP using a lot of AJAX elements, makes it very web 2.0. I particularly like a feature that enables one click on the URL and searchmash will do the site search for you. Searchmash just launched its flash interface two months ago. If you like fancy, this new version is for you.

The second one gives search engine an extreme twist! [MS DEWEY] by Microsoft. Frankly, I couldn’t understand the purpose of this experimental search engine. Well, clearly I believe it is designed to test user experience. Feature-wise, I don’t see too much cutting-edge technology. But the presentation is quite refreshing.

Go and take a look. And try this in your test: switch on the speaker, when you are in the search mode, try not to do anything and see what will happen.

Alright, besides the above two experimental search engines, there are some other new projects making their ways to debut in 2008. But I can only provide just two names because they are currently operated in stealth mode. Both are said to have new promising technology that will shock the world.

Cuill, and Blekko. Blekko is founded by Rich Skrenta who created the first computer virus … Splendid!
