My Mini Zeitgeist

02.19.08 | Comments

It is always interesting to read the analytics of my blog. My content pretty much engage with the readers organically. I use GA primarily for some basic metrics. I also use HitTail to track real time search hits. So I know how my readers are engaged by the content when they’re searching something on the web and being brought to my blog. I do not optimize my blog in a sophisticated way. My blog is basically reader-friendly rather than search-engine friendly.

If you have followed my blog, you probably know I have published many posts about B2B marketing. Clearly the peers from B2B community are my intended audiences. I have an average 10% referral traffic from Google that is directly linked to the keyword “Alibaba,” compare to “Global Sources” which is 2.5%.

All the searches are long tail that means no particular predominant phrase or keyword in the search. Or I should say, “Alibaba” and “Global Sources” are two significant B2B keywords among the long tail in the search to my site. I believe this is quite in line with the market.

It is also interesting to know how people search using keyword phrases. What the readers want to know and try to compare. I have some inspiring long tail search phrases such as “b2b marketing leader alibaba,” “b2b mobile marketing,” “b2b asia buyer demographics,” “b2b tradeshow lead generation.”

Among all the keyword phrases, I find an interesting pattern. People are comparing “Alibaba vs. Global Sources,” while searching for “Alibaba business model” and “Global Sources business model.” They also search for other phrases like “ebay alibaba similarities” and “global sources for ebay power sellers.”

Alright, does this mini zeitgeist mean something about the B2B market? In my humble opinion, it does tell an important part of how the B2B market works in this region.

  • Great post. I especially found it interesting. For this matter, once I discussed with one of my friends, not only about the content you talked about, but also to how to improve and develop, but no results. So I am deeply moved by what you said today.*
