Canton Fair Dot Com

09.15.08 | Comments

Guess who runs Cantonfair.com?  It is Global Sources. The domain name was registered in 1997, four years before the Canton Fair official domain – Cantonfair.org.cn. The domain history tells us it was registered by a company called Promoexport Advertising Consultants Sdn Bhd and hosted under two Global Sources domain servers since 2001.

The website is up recently, filled with pretty much the content about Guangzhou, a.k.a. Canton. The site is very Global Source-alike and no surprise that you will find the information of the China Sourcing Fair. In the exhibitors section, all the listed companies are linked back to their pages hosted in Globalsources.com.

Why would Global Sources want to run Cantonfair.com? Well, one obvious reason that I can imagine is for the SEO advantage. The site is now ranked number two for the keyword “Canton Fair” on Google. The rank is achieved pretty fast. There must be many backlinks contributed by Globalsources.com and its hundreds of subdomains, which give Cantonfair.com a very powerful leverage. Also, a very interesting finding is that even on Wikipedia, a couple of articles about trade show, trade fair, trade convention, are all referring Cantonfair.com as the website for the China Import and Export Fair. This will contribute a lot to the search engine ranking.

Domain name is like real estate. If you own it, you own it. But owning a competitor’s domain name and to operate the site that targets technically the same audiences, this practice is arguable and can be harmful. I won’t recommend it.

Hello, i wonder if you know the company Mystaru from China/USA. They own several divisions : Subaye ( B2B platform with big Panyu goverment support recently ), Mystaru ( online education // growing very rapidly ), Stareastnet ( online star academy ), Panyu import & export ( they own a license for this // logistic services for Ebay China ), Google SaaS distributor, etcetera ...

It seems that Subaye has a booth together with Google on the Canton Fair now to promote Google Saas and cloud computing.
Do you have sources to verify this and can you get pictures of videos as a proof that they are present there ?

I'm invested in the mother company Mystaru ( MYST.OB ) and the share price at this moment is very low.
When the world knows that they also have a strong partnership with Google in China, then the share price will go up very fast. But we need proof of that.

I would appreciate if you could come back to me with info, positive or negative.

    Kind regards,

    E. Luyten,

  • Subaye indeed has a couple of co-ops with Google China since 2007. Here is a news clip (in Chinese) about Subaye signing an agreement with Google China for SAAS. But I don't know if there is any cloud computing solution available at the moment.

Unlike Alibaba which the coverage is more national, Subaye-Google deal is very likely to be regional for Guangdong province only.

I don't have any source about the subaye booth at Canton Fair but I won't be surprised if they have one.
